Asherville Public School

Located in the township, Kroonvale, the existing school, consisting of single storey administration, ablution and classroom buildings and two large double storey classroom buildings, is in a severe state of disrepair. The primary focus of the project is the complete renovation of these buildings; including civil, electrical and mechanical infrastructure. Some internal spatial changes are also required in order to bring the certain spaces in line with current regulations. The brief also asks for additional Classrooms, a Library, Computer Room and Dining Hall. The Matrix… identified these new additions as a space-making opportunity and used their formal arrangement to reorganize the overall site circulation and create two new courtyard spaces (assembly and study). The architectural language of the new additions takes clues from the original buildings (for example roof pitch); but deliberately contrasts them in terms of scale and proportion, detail and choice of materials and colours.
