Embizweni Square
This project revolves around the refurbishment of a square in the heart of New Brighton – an initiative of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) and included new public toilets, hawking facilities, bus shelters, a tower and podium. The tower is placed off the center of the square and forms the central feature of the proposal. The tower is positioned on the intersection of the center lines of Mendi Road and Jolobe Street. It represents an important landmark in the otherwise monotonous and flat area of New Brighton. The aim of the reconstruction of Embizweni Square is to develop the central open space into a meeting place for people, to act as a central public transport collector and a place for important and everyday events to take place. The tower was designed to be decorated with a theme relating to the name Embizweni: “the gathering of people”. Local artists used ceramics to decorate the tower and reflect the history of the area.
