Motherwell Stadium Upgrade

The project entailed the partial upgrade of the main Grandstand at Motherwell NU2 Stadium with the main focus centered around the addition of a bar/lounge area for VIP visitors as well as a small conference venue. Furthermore the introduction of a passenger lift ensured disabled access and is now an integral part of the main Grandstand allowing all users to successfully utilise every stadium level. Working within a rigid concrete frame as part of the Grandstand main structure presented numerous design challenges in turn resulting in an overall architectural language of infill and addition. An articulation of contemporary materials and form was chosen, clearly distinguishing the current addition from existing work as well as offering a richly layered aesthetic within the predominantly utilitarian Grandstand character. Carefully positioned vertical louvres offer much needed sun protection on the northern facade without compromising natural light and surrounding views.
