Qunu Development
Qunu City is a project designed to create a living memorial to the greatest man of the twentieth century, former President Nelson Mandela, in his home village, Qunu, Transkei, Province of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This living memorial will be realised through creating an integrated sustainable living environment characterised by historical, cultural and heritage expressions that will attract local, international tourists and investors to experience firsthand the life and times of the world's most revered leader.
The overall vision of this project aims at encapsulating the essence of Nelson Mandela. Various structures will house information about his heritage/lineage, culture, presidency and life thereafter.
Supporting structures will accommodate functions that will reflect the culture of the Transkei and the Xhosa people as well as providing accommodation for visitors. The aim is to create a world class place rooted in the spirit of the Transkei, enabling visitors to experience the extraordinary life of Nelson Mandela.
The first phase comprises of the following buildings:
- The Presidential Library
- The Xhosa Institute
- The Freedom Statue
